In Chapter 10 of the text book, the end of the chapter discusses the beginning of the "blockbuster" film. The two movies and directors mentioned in this small segment were Stephen Spielberg with Jaws and George Lucas with Star Wars.
I wanted to focus on Jaws because I think that people underestimate the power of this movie. I screened this movie last week and realized how much fear this movie puts into its viewers. I remember watching this movie as a child, and to this day I am absolutely terrified to go out too far in the ocean. I even have a fear that Great White Sharks hide in large waves as a sneaking mechanism. Jaws is well acted and directed doing its job almost perfectly; that job is to terrify people and provide the viewers with a story that has come true in many places around the world.
How about you? Were you terrified watching this movie as a kid? As an adult?
I have to agree with you that this film is one that tries to scare its viewers and it does a good job at this. Any kid that watches this movie really feels the fear while watching it and anytime they go near the water after watching it.
ReplyDeleteI also was interested as I looked into the facts about the release of the film, Jaws. When it was released, it created a entirely new amount of fear in the people who watched the film. People were not used to the images they saw in the film and some of them could not even handle watching it and walked out. To me, like I said in a post already, it seems as if the idea of horror over time has become normal and also because of that, people are used to what is shown. The film makers attempt to make their films even more gory so the viewers still feel that feeling of nausea or fear as they watch the film. For the creators to do this, they make the films even more gory each time a film is made so that people do not get used to a certain amount of goriness at a time.
ReplyDeleteThis film definitely scared me as a child. Sharks were the scary monster that parents can't deny they exist. But now as an adult i think i'm able to put more logic into it and reason that the chances of a shark attack around here are pretty slim. Or at least make myself more educated. But even rewatching Jaws i can't deny the a couple jumps out of my seat. Spielberg did a great job creating a monster that is realistic and created suspense that put the audience on the edge of our seats
ReplyDeleteJaws is definitely a terrifying movie, regardless of how fake the shark looks when it pops out of the water. It's suspenseful and has a great plot. It's scary because shark sightings have been occurring everywhere these days, which is something I never thought I'd have to worry about.
